Consider a job in sales. The thank-you-note rule makes more sense. In a customer facing job, the mispronunciation test makes sense. In a bureaucracy kept-waiting makes sense. They all limit false positives just like FizzBuzz.

From an employer perspective, more candidates than jobs is a common problem. Finding reasons to whittle the stack of resumes is an ordinary solution. But seemingly arbitrary measures often ain't. Which-school maintains organizational culture. It gives people something in common outside the work.

None of it is necessarily fair.
