Ask HN: Where to Learn Basics of Electronics

I have a couple of ideas I would like to prototype, pretty much off the shelf components with a power supply and maybe some smart switching attached. Where can I learn enough about electronics to (safely) plug some things like a fan and a rechargeable battery pack together? Maybe move onto Aurdino level projects after.
