Ask HN: Is a show HN with a Steam game okay

1 points by offtop5 ↗ HN
Hi everybody, I'm looking forward to publishing a very small game fairly soonish. Is everyone generally cool with me posting a link to a steam page where you can download the game. I know this website tends to be very much against centralized platforms such as Steam, but I'd rather not just send an AWS link.

Here's a link to the official rules for "Show HN"'s: https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html

You can also contact the mods directly if you have a question that's not answered.

Looks like forcing users to sign up for an account is frowned upon.

This is something Steam definitely does, so I'll release a version on Itch.io which doesn't require a sign up.

This is just my impression but forcing users to sign up for an account would be a problem only if it was directly owned and managed by your product and you were the possessor of the account data. Accounts for a third party, particularly for something ubiquitous like Steam, would probably not run afoul of this rule.
In that case I'll go ahead and email the mods to ask.

Thanks for the response, I hope to target PC and Mac early next year

Best to email the mods and ask. They’re friendly. Contact link in the footer if you decide to.
