I would say WordPress is probably what You want to use. Assuming You know nothing but that, what You want to search for is Content Management System, sometimes acronyms are used so often the meanings of them get lost. (Especially on technical subjects). So yes there are many other CMS out there but WordPress is still very popular.
I feel like WordPress is too much the obvious choice, which can mean security risks, dependency risks, even hurting performance. What do you think about this?
Those risks are overrated. It's more likely that the security flaws are patched quickly in Wordpress. Whatever else you'll use, you'll be just as dependent on that. Wordpress is very performant if you optimize it for that.
There are many other choices depending on what you want. If you just want a blog with a comment section, you could use hugo + disqus and host it on an s3 bucket. It will be fast and will cost very little to host.
You could go with something like Laravel if you want more control over the dynamic website. I say Laravel because if you've been developing for Wordpress, PHP is the most familiar language.
There's always Joomla which is more flexible and will give you some diversity while being familiar (also PHP).
If you're OK with Python, there's always the trusted old Plone CMS.
There are many other choices. Depends on what kind of websites you want to build and what you're looking for.
I remember https://boltcms.io/ being a good alternative in some ways, but like SubGenius already mentioned, it does not have the same selection of plugins or themes as WordPress.

Really depends on how much Wordpress you know. If you're just using it as a CMS, then you should probably stick with it.
If you're familiar with PHP and JS, there are other CMS you could switch to. Though you'll not find the same ecosystem of plugins and tooling.
