Assuming the stated information is accurate, it's both remarkable and quite scary how much information is being leaked just by doing everyday things like calling and travelling – even for people that try to fly under the radar.
Considering that most of this information is publicly available (well, at least on the grey market), I would think that some intelligence services have a complete, way more detailed directory of every person on earth. I'd love to know just how extensive we all are documented in there. :)
I would say this is another proof that fears of privacy advocates are misplaced, and reduced privacy is more beneficial to ordinary people. Of course all people have secrets that they want to keep hidden, but revealing secrets of ordinary people will just change the boundaries of accepted behavior, while revealing secrets of governments will limit their power.
They are being followed by the state, not companies or ordinary people, and incompetent government agencies collecting then leaking travel information helped them to find the agents who have tried to kill them. So why would they disagree?
