Ask HN: How to Backup a Google Account?

6 points by mderazon ↗ HN
My life (and many others) rely too much on information being stored on Google's products.

Between the outage recently and occasional accidental account closures, does anyone know of a way to backup a Google account to some cloud storage (S3 / Azure storage etc) ?

I know Google Takeout exists, but it is

1. Manual 2. Not incremental backup (need to upload from scratch each time)

Google has no interest in you having a backup. Use takeout and make it regularly. With a script if necessary. This holidays I'm moving to fastmail.
As someone who moved to Fastmail from Gmail (after a scare with Gmail access), you won't regret your choice. I strongly recommend using a custom domain and always running IMAP backups.
I have a raspberry pi and encryped usb drive syncing my Google docs everyday with rclone. A nice touch with rclone is your files are synced locally as usable docs e.g docx, xls.

I have also started running my own nextcloud server locally. I will probably migrate to nextcloud over the next 6 months. I will give nextcloud a good rattle before I make the change.

It's awesome what Google gives away for free. Their killing off services has made me nervous enough to plan for a future where I don't rely on them.
