Ask HN: How to secure a web exposed TCP Socket from attack?

I'm wondering, there's solutions for websites, what about regular old TCP connections? Would you put multiple sockets behind a load balancer? Add an IP rule to the firewall when detecting abuse? What is the "Good Enough" solution that you've used?
