I always like to remind people that alcohol is a powerful carcinogen. And, of course, sugar is death.
Anecdote: One side of my family were smokers and drinkers. died in their 60's. The other were a bunch of RLDS Latter day Saints, never smoked, never drank, ate plain meals, all died in their late eighties or older. Tellingly they were healthy and active for their first 80 years. I early on decided to follow their example without the RLDS part.
I hear you. Both my parents were alcoholics (and, significantly, smokers) and both died from cancer -- and my mom quite young.

The evils of sugar are less obvious until you develop Type 2 diabetes...
