The number of new doctors entering medical school is limited by the medical associations to ensure that the specter of price competiting never occurs.
There are similar monopolistic licencing practices in all professions, even in trades person organisations.
I recall this piece of BS inflicted on an engineer by a pro association - the judge killed it, but it had a cost to all of us.

In India, you take your pre-med classes in 11th and 12th grade of high school and then apply to medical school. You finish medical school at 22 or 23. Many doctors trained in India come to the U.S., and their training does prepare them for the USMLE exams on even terms with American medical school graduates.
A bachelor's degree should not be required to go to medical school or law school. You can pay doctors and lawyers less if you reduce the cost of their educations.
Removing the restrictions and regulations would help with demand. In some states you have to go to a doctor to get a prescription/referral for getting blood work done. The doctor just sends you to a lab company so why not go there first instead of the current wasteful process? CPAP machines are another example. Buy one directly, illegally, or go through multiple rounds of appointments to get the same machine.
If someone is more comfortable going to a doctor, that's fine. Making it a requirement is silly though.
After the quality of care that I just received from one of America's top hospitals, I think we need to raise the standards for becoming a doctor quickly.
When I have more time I'll be creating a blog about it.
Medically unnecessary surgeries are a HUGE problem in our system and I'm worried that creating more doctors could possibly exacerbate the problem here.
Education and healthcare have runaway costs compared to industries in the private sectors. Maybe the government shouldn’t subsidize nonprofit colleges and hospitals, as they create a distorted uncompetitive market.
