Geoengineering is arguably the most efficient (on average) way of containing and reverting climate change.
It is also a potentially devastating weapon. Just like gain-of-function research in human pathogens which may have given us SARS-CoV-2.
Rest assured China will experiment ruthlessly with weather and climate modification for its own political ends. With this in mind, we have nothing to lose by doing our own R&D and moving geoengineering closer to higher TRLs.
I imagine the doom predictions will be tempered by how hard and expensive it is to actually produce measurable lasting weather change. There's a lot of head-in-the-sand "If we don't know, we can imagine the worst!" resistance.
Yeah, I can't quite understood the resistance to this. People against it would have us play chicken with the future (a future they are ostensibly worried about) in the hope that we can turn enough in the direction they want at the last moment. "If we can't avoid it this way, then it's better if we don't avoid it."
I accept climate change is an existential threat to our civilization and species, and all directions are on the table to mitigate the threat.
