The current generation of social media offerings are so horribly broken, I don't know that they can be fixed. All of the the incentives that underpin their business model seem to be be misaligned with actual social cohesion.
I think that people sometimes forget that this [1] is what Facebook started as and I can not express how much of a toxic starting point that was.
We need to rethink what social media COULD BE rather than what we have now. How can we make something that is both sustainable, something that works for society and something that has the ability to deal bad faith actors.
