If you use firefox and https everywhere, here is a rule you can put in <firefox-profile>\HTTPSEverywhereUserRules\News.ycombinator.xml

  <ruleset name="News.ycombinator">
  	<target host="news.ycombinator.com" />
  	<rule from="^http://(www\.)?news.ycombinator\.com/" to="https://news.ycombinator.com/"/>
  </ruleset>

I discovered this via the HTTPS Finder extension

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/https-finder/

used together with HTTPS Everywhere is very nice for discovering sites that serve via HTTPS
