Soaring Bitcoin prices put Central Washington electrical utilities on alert (seattletimes.com)

It is odd that they have resorted to charging miners higher fees while they have an excess of available power. With no way to store that power, why not put it toward mining? Utilities could work out deals with miners to mine on their behalf and earn bitcoin revenue.
