As an Apple user myself, it’s easy to forget details like this and be blinded by the “Apple is more secure” mantra...
Apple fights consumer surveillance well. This is a distinction that seems to get lost; it's not all forms.
Did the backup messages/keys to iCloud thing start before or after the FBI demanded Apple unlock a device?
As far as I remember, anything backed up to iCloud was never E2E encrypted. Only backups to your iTunes are E2E encrypted.
