I have seen gifs of a very simple image with sparkles and/or firework explosions. Is there an easy way to do this?

Using a file converter will probably do the trick. There are also GIF-making websites that allow for more customization.

The simple method would be to find an image editing website and simply apply an animated effect to the image - e.g overlaying a gif of sparkles.

The other option is to convert the GIF into a video file and use video editing software - this is probably overkill, but does give you more options.

In GIMP you can split an existing GIF (or video) into separate layers. Then you can edit and replace some of the layers. And when you save the picture again as GIF, it askes if you want to save it as an animation and what is the speed of that animation.
