The first amendment and free speech only applies to government, not to business at large.

it does apply to business at large. phone companies are not allowed to deny you access to your phone based on your speech.
The first amendment isn't "broken". The new york times is broken.

The willingness of these mainstream publications to throw out wildly radical statements, such as that the core tenets of our society like the first amendment are broken and nobody bats an eye is pretty terrifying.

I personally think it signals that the US is on a road to some kind of revolution which revokes a lot of those principals. I definitely don't view things like that as off the table in the way I would have 4 years ago anymore.
