Ask HN: Best eInk Reader

I'm in the market for a new e-ink reader. My main goal is going to be just to read pdfs/ebooks on it, though note taking will be nice I'm torn between ReMarkable 2 and Onyxx Boox Note Air/3 (sadly I don't think I can justify the Lumi). Do any of y'all have experience with either/both? Is there a different brand y'all'd recommend?

Really, all I want is e-ink, frontlighting and some good battery life.

You should look for some reviews on YouTube, I have researched this space quite a bit and found this video to be one of the best https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ-mW6otcXw. I bought a remarkable 2, and I really wanted to like it but the reading experience was so bad. The writing was wonderful though, but my primary use is reading. I don’t think you’re going to be satisfied with a remarkable. At this point I would recommend an Onyx. They are above average ereaders with above average writing experience. They don’t seem to be the absolute best at either but they are far better in aggregate than any other device because all other devices seem to sacrifice too much in one area.

It seems like you want a larger screen but if you’re fine with a smaller screen and no writing capability I recommend you get a dedicated ereader like a kindle; they really do excel at the ereading experience

Yeah I do really want the larger screen because of pdfs. My fire, and the other Kindles (non-Fire) I've used just make it a struggle to read pdfs on the device because of how small the screen size is.

Otherwise, thanks. I was already leaning towards the Onyx so this probably seals it.

I want an 8x1/2 by 11 (standard US paper size) screen area device for reading PDFs. So far I haven't found one. It should have high dpi so I can read graphs embedded in papers. It should handle the new terabyte micro cards.

I don't need network access. I don't need writing. I don't need color.

Someday somebody will make one.

The Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-reader that you can buy right now.

Best for reading, great battery life, with 300 ppi it has a screen that is very clear and easy to read on. The battery can last up to 8 weeks if you read for 30 minutes a day.

I missed that you wanted to a PDF reader. The Paperwhite is terrible for that.
