SF centric, but there are probably a fair share of HNers who fall into the “gifted student, held back by mediocre school” camp, so the topic is hopefully of broader interest.
A test-to-get-in high quality public high school is about to be converted to lottery admission (= same as all the other high schools), and will presumably over time revert to the mean performance of SF high schools, hurting the very students this move is ostensibly intended to help.
(The latter obv subject to debate, and presumably the school board disagrees)
Is there any study polling the kids? Shouldn’t this at least reduce parents pushing the kids to the hilt to get test scores and help them have a balanced childhood? This will also give the poorer folks a chance and introduce diversity.
