LMMS is more akin to FL studio, geared toward making electronic music with a sequencer and such. Ardour is more akin to Cubase, geared towards recording music from instruments and arranging it. Both are highly capable and can easily do both. There are a number of videos or blogs explaining the diff check them out.
Fun timing on this post, I just started learning to use LMMS a couple days ago. It seems to be a pretty good piece of software even if there are some kinks to work out with the plugins.
Ran into issues with loading VST plugins, apparently their GUIs won't work when using multiple monitors on Linux. I have to go into the display settings and disable my second monitor before using any plugins, which is a pain.
I wish the music community had more mainstream open source DAW adoption. With so many incredible and portable VST plugins, an open source core is such a great fit.
