So it's ok to call it U.K. coronavirus strain, but Wuhan it's not ok
For what it's worth, in the UK it's called the UK variant or Kent variant.
The big difference being that no one is trying to score cheap political points when they call it “the UK variant”.
What if the people who call out the names they don't like are the ones trying to score cheap political points? That seems more likely to me.

We could have controlled this virus a lot better in the beginning if it wasn't for cheap political point scoring of the form "the real problem isn't the virus, the real problem is anti-Asian racism"

Almost half a million Americans have died from the virus. To my knowledge, 0 have died from anti-Asian racism from the virus.

This is well understood to be a matter of naming convenience. The UK variant was first detected in the UK but may have first appeared elsewhere. Some suspect based on spread that the UK variant may have first appeared in the US.
This supports the prediction [1] posted on HN 2 months ago.

25 days ago, not 2 months, and the article also pointed out that lockdown fatigue and holidays were estimated by Ireland health authorities to contribute +1.0 to the Re rate, with the virulence of the new variant adding ~+0.5-0.7. But yeah, it's bad news and I hope state governments resist easing restrictions.
You're correct, 25 days ago.
Use cannot say Wu Han, or chinese ... but you can say Uk strain. Why? Racist against the white or black. South American? Brazil?

Use a number 2021-V1 v2 v3 etc or those strange number. Be consistent.

Or because we do not have sharp power.
