X and Wayland is a good illustration why desktop Linux never progresses. Tons of wasted development effort in dead/useless technologies like Systemd/Pulseaudio/Xorg when the market is clearly moving elsewhere. The Linux kernel is mostly fine, however userland has been a disaster for years. To have a forward facing userland you pretty much need to run Arch or Gentoo, which isn’t really a serious option for people who need productivity.
