Such bullshit citations are the biggest problem nowadays. Recombinations every 20-50 years lead to more dangerous variants. 99% of all recombinations lead to less severe variants. Recombinations make about 5% of all mutations. Mostly it's just wear and tear, loosing parts.
With all new variants appearing, the absolute numbers of severe cases are going down. Less severe variants have higher transmissibility, because people have no reactions. High asymptotic rates.
