What I think is most interesting here, and in machine learning assisted mass surveillance, is not what is at the cutting edge in regards to big name publications such as Nature, but what is cutting edge in regards to institutions that would never admit to the blade their cutting with. Do Five Eyes, {Chinese, Russian} military intelligence have access to and usage of machine learning already to determine political orientation based on physical appearance and communication style already? Or are they so beholden to bureaucracy that they will always be years behind the curve? And doomed to always purchase such technology from private contractors whose existence will be public?

It seems to me Big Tech companies such as Google and Facebook hoarding our personal data could be an advantage for privacy here, because their data is at least beholden to the privacy laws of the United States.
