New York is brutal. My wife went to college there and they continued to try and claim tax from her for six years after she moved to Maryland. Each year she needed to send in her lease and utility bills to prove she didn't live in New York. That wasn't even telework. She moved to Maryland to work in Maryland and maintained no presence at all in New York.

This is stupid anyway. I live in Texas and work from home for a military program based out of Colorado, for a business in Virginia (fully remote with no home office at all), subsidiary of a company in California, recently acquired by a company in Germany, creating and deploying software that runs in data centers in arbitrary locations throughout North America. Who should get to tax me?

IMO it should be the place where you live and use the roads and schools and police and firefighters.
