How does collaboration work at big tech companies?

I'm curious to know how big companies manage communication and knowledge with thousands of employees. I imagine that at big tech just a few employees have access to the entire code base. But how can someone manage to develop a new feature just by seeing a portion of what is happening? Do they still use email? Do they host their own SVN repos? Maybe these questions have been asked before but I couldn't find much on it.
