Metafont has rather fallen by the wayside as a technique for producing fonts, despite the extraordinary promise that the idea of stroke-based fonts holds. Producing CJK typefaces, where there are thousands of characters and all characters are made using clear strokes (unlike e.g. Western serif fonts), seems like a clear use case for this technology.
