Do you save any fossil energy sending a web request around the world to where the Sun shines considering the cost to send the data?
I remember reading that distributing a video games to an XBox One via internet releases more carbon into the atmosphere than distributing the game via a Blu-Ray.
The amount of energy required to send a bit per mile might be irreducible in the end or at least not scalable the way the CMOS microprocessor has been.

Without a source, I'd have to say that this smells incorrect -- I would really love to see the origin of this thought.
