First microwave-powered home boiler could help cut emissions (theguardian.com) 3 points by npunt 5y ago ↗ HN
[–] npunt 5y ago ↗ Key points:* Uses new solid state microwave generator that is more efficient than magnetron used in microwave ovens* Claimed 84% efficient, with 12% waste heat recycling = total efficiency of 96%* Drop-in replacement for gas boiler, possibly only some electrical work needed* Still requires tank as it does not do instant boiling* UK is phasing out gas powered water heaters in new homes by 2025* Electrical heaters currently cost more to operate than gas* Product is currently being prototyped with trials in EOY 2022 and launch 2024Company website is here: https://www.heatwayv.com
[–] wrycoder 5y ago ↗ Upvoted to see if anyone here might know how this possibly could be any improvement over plain resistance heating, which has an efficiency of 100%. [–] Turing_Machine 5y ago ↗ Came here to ask exactly the same question. If there is any benefit over a straight resistance heater, it can't be discerned from that article. [–] Turing_Machine 5y ago ↗ Their picture of "emissions" is also dubious/amusing. If it's from natural gas, what you see in that photo is basically steam.CO2 is invisible. The smell of snake oil is pretty strong with this.
