For what it's worth, those in charge of this endeavor will rely heavily on Section 230, just as every comment host does - large (a few) and small (countless).
Hopefully federal officials will eventually stop trying to sacrifice the millions to cripple the few.
holy fish sticks are they going to have to rely on 230.
I don't see the traitors to 230 ability to host / safe harbor protections as being particularly under assault from federal officials. now that the doj is changed, is no longer off it's rockers. it's been a persistent political party, a highly partisan attack against the new mediums, assaulting their protections to host.
Say what you will about the Donald, this is a pretty smart play. There's demand in the American market for a "free speech" platform and after 'big tech' put the kibosh on Parler, the news cycle is aligned perfectly. I'd not be surprised if Fox and co got involved in this too.
What makes you think it'd be about free speech rather than about Trump worship? /r/the_donald had heavy censorships and a huge banlist people saying anything not pro-Trump.
Also I am not sure of the demand for a free speech alternative. It'd be full of extremists(from all sides) and trolls. Gab and Parler come to mind.
Lol why does it not surprise me to see this argument here?
/r/the_donald was a subreddit and it had its own rules -- which mandated being a supporter of trump.
You're thinking of a different subreddit, maybe /r/politics as an example, that are pretending to foster a broad discussion and selectively suppressing opinions it doesnt like.
I don't know... Trump successfully convinced half the country that the entirety of social media was controlled by Marxists, filled with lies and propaganda and cancel culture extremists out to get them, and that they had no hope of free expression anywhere within the mainstream (which was never really true, but as a meme it caught on like wildfire.) And now he's investing in providing the "alternative." Or at least licensing his name to the alternative, as with most of his investments.
It's basically what Fox News did IRT marketing themselves as the "fair and balanced" alternative to the bias of "liberal" media, and they were clearly successful at it. It's probably just another grift for Trump but it might not be a complete failure.
It's at least more on-brand for him than the steaks were.
I don't live in the USA and have never listed to a single Trump speech.
From my experience in international [1] software projects I can fully confirm that the infrastructure is controlled by pseudo-Maoists; Mostly rich white males (their terminology) from Google, Microsoft, Instagram and Bloomberg who don't code much but pretend to be woke in order to keep their cushy positions.
These people have established a reign of terror. The business model is to attract large contributions, love bombing new contributors and then drop them like hot potatoes if they ever slightly go against the power structure.

Rules of subreddits are on the sidebar.
