Ask HN: Would you be interested in becoming an engineering mercenary?

2 points by Riphyak ↗ HN
Looking for a feedback on a startup idea, fuelled by the recent boom in engineering jobs market.

Let's say you join a well-funded Silicon Valley company on a full-time basis (and a Bay Area level of salary), but for a limited time: usually between 6 and 12 months.

You get 1-month notice before the engagement ends and after that receive fixed monthly retainer until you get another similar offer.

What would look like a reasonable retainer to make this worth considering for you?

Does retainer mean less than my full salary? If so, I don't see why I would plan to take a pay cut on-purpose. What's the upside here? Do I also lose benefits during that down time?
Thanks. The idea is that you're getting a retainer equivalent to a mid-market salary outside Bay Area - and then get Bay Area level compensation (+30-50%) while on an active job. You don't lose your benefits
What's the new thing here that contractors don't already do? The "insurance policy" of being paid a retainer until you get your next job, or something else that I'm missing?
Thanks for your question. 1) The gigs are guaranteed full-time and 3 months minimum. 2) Yes, the 'insurance'. You become de-facto employed full-time - with an upside when you're getting a project with a customer.
