ELI5:

Your body uses vitamin D to tell different parts of your body what to do. Some people have a problem. The body stops listening to vitamin D. So those parts of the body don't work properly and the people get sick. They get "auto-immune" sickness, like psoriasis or MS.

A doctor can test your blood and look for this problem. The article shows how to do that test. It teaches doctors a lot about the problem.

If a person takes a lot of vitamin D, they will get very sick. But if their body isn't listening to vitamin D, then they won't. So a doctor gives you vitamin D. And she checks your blood every week to see if it's enough or too much. This is called the "Coimbra Protocol". Some people get healed with it.

I looked up the Coimbra protocol, which is an ugly Wix site peddling a book. I've got to say, my bullshit meter was off the charts, so I am a bit suprised to see actual research confirming it.
Ugly: Yes

Wix: Yes

Book: Free

So not _too_ much peddling, at least.

Multiple sclerosis is so depressing and formidable as a malady that medical science avoids it. One of the front line treatments is an elementary drug for psoriasis developed in the 1930s. At cost it's 4$/kg and from biogen 300$ a capsule.
Interesting. My girlfriend has both an autoimmune condition and chronically low vitamin D. This is definitely something to discuss with her and her doctor as an avenue of investigation.
Had severe vit d shortage and an autoimmune condition (Sjogrens) Was basically at deaths door. Started heavy vit D. And several others.

Huge improvement. Not cured. Life is still hard. But I have a life now.

What are the several others?
Magnesium, Vit E, turmeric, fish oil. B complex. Plaqunial

Had to give up the plaqunial. Shame it helped a lot

As in HCQ? Why (if you don’t mind talking about it)?
Helps with Sjogrens. Stops destruction of organs. improves energy level.

Unfortunately it drastically increases cranial pressure, anxiety. Can’t hold down a job on it.

So slow body destruction it is.

That was the same (third-party) experience I had - the psychological side effects are woefully underplayed.

Still searching for a more creative provider to try steroids or biologics - Sjögren’s gets dismissed as manageable so easily, but I can’t help but see it the way you described. Progressive neuropathy and spasticity are terrifying.

I love how so many things start and stop at vitamin D as if without sun we would have no existence. That's like superman.
I've only skimmed the article, but it confirms what I've seen reported from people who have chronic illnesses like CFS, autoimmune diseases and Lyme: chronically low Vitamin D. levels. I have psoriasis and Vitamin D supplementation definitely helps.
