The Marines are full of overconfident males with big egos. Kind of expected
Thing changed. Back in the day they would have been told to show up to be vaccinated.
Also extremely fit and healthy overall
From the article:

> The military cannot make the vaccines mandatory now because they have only emergency use authorizations from the Food and Drug Administration, meaning service members who are required to receive a series of other vaccinations have the option of declining shots to protect against Covid-19.

Vaccine clinical trials excluded people who had already recovered from Covid. We know that T-cell immunity is effective and long-lasting against a range of coronavirus variants, unlike specific antibodies whose duration of protection may be limited. What is the estimated percentage of Marines (or even the general population) who have already had Covid and recovered, whose naturally acquired immunity may be better than any vaccine?

Unrelated, it's odd that everyone who expresses concern over different aspects of vaccines are labelled anti vaxxer etc.. in few circles.

Here in India, many people have concerns over quality of vaccines and whether appropriate testing is done before releasing them. I think that's a valid concern considering how rampant corruption is.

"Frushour said there are a number of potential reasons a Marine may choose not to receive a vaccine, including allowing others to receive it first, waiting until it becomes mandatory, getting it through other channels or being allergic to the vaccine."

#1 is my friends experience. He's young, in great shape, is on base 90% of the time, and he doesn't feel that he deserves it. A bit noble and perhaps misguided, but he wants to be sure the elderly are taken care of first.
