I'm one of the authors of this article -- happy to answer questions if anyone has any.
Maybe I misread the conclusion of the study, but it seems obvious that presenting pictures of beaches next to coronavirus articles is going to create a negative association (overestimation of risk) with beaches.

It brings to mind the guy who stalked beaches in Florida with the reaper outfit. It’s absurd and foolish in retrospect. Especially now that sunlight seems to be proving to be extremely potent at deactivating the virus.

I suspect the larger issue is that most people overestimate their risk of severe illness wrt sars-cov-2 more generally beyond the risk of catching it in specific places, and would be interested in seeing any work around assessing that.
