Great article, I don't have a source off hand but I think a major reason most housing in La is so hard to build it's just due to minimum parking requirements. Cars are the absolute worst thing to happen to the middle class, at best you're going to be spending $300 a month on that, at worst you might spend a thousand. Most people probably spend about 500 bucks a month, just to drive. If you're only making $2,000 a month, that's an extra $400 over a $100 bus pass. Plus you have numerous other social cost. You can't get a DUI if you don't have a car and you don't drive, you can't get parking tickets without a car. One of my key methods for getting out of debt has been going car free. America might be too far gone here though, so many are trapped in an extremely nasty pit of needing to borrow money to buy a car, and then coming up short on other bills. Chicago is outstanding in offering both affordable housing and great public transit.
Nitpick: you don’t need a car to get a DUI.

DUIs typically refer to being in control of a vehicle, where “vehicle” can include horse-drawn carriages or bicycles.
