I am working on https://firedating.me - a dating site for FIRE (Financial Independence / Early Retirement) enthusiasts. One can also look for friends there. The stats are public: https://firedating.me/open
The site is 100% free and even ad-free. It is my hobby project and I just enjoy helping others, meeting interesting people and learning while developing it.
Looks like loneliness is widespread in the FIRE community especially during the current times, so there is a large demand for meeting like minded folks.
It took me at least 517 hours and 211$ so far, but I met a lot of people and learned so much. It definitely gets harder and harder to continue developing it on my own, since the code base and complexity grows. But I try to fight that and use more ready-made solutions.
I don't want to artificially slow down the users, so I am considering donations. This would align my incentives with the users' the most. There is a vague idea to use financial contribution as a way to validate account and seriousness. Some people are extremely serious about their search. They can feel frustrated by the people, who spend less effort. I could make some "super serious" club with profile moderation and some contribution.
If you want to work together on building an app, let me know! I have several decently successful iOS apps on the store including Hacker News client HACK.
Seriously cool idea, sounds like fun and it might be quite refreshing for the fire-folks to talk to like-minded people, it can be hard not to talk about your passion too much.
It is interesting that so many people think of gold diggers, but so far this haven't been a problem (there is a way to report users and the number of reports is very small).
My impression is that FIRE folks are not that good of target. But I understand that this could become more of a problem when the site grows and I have couple ideas how I could tackle it then.
You should absolutely submit this to /r/fire and /r/fatfire on Reddit. Finding a financially compatible partner is crucial for long term life success. Wishing you much success.
I've been developing a Chrome extension for learning foreign language vocabulary from sites you love - http://vocabboost.online/. Basically, it makes fill-in-the-blanks quiz out of any webpage. It is language agnostic (just relies on word separators), so it works with almost all languages. Users asked to support Japanese, so I use TinySegmenter for Japanese word separation. Recently I added a word bank feature to save interesting words and export them.
I actually don’t have social media (a part from HN), so I’m not sure.
Does Twitter show all Tweets made in current area? And is it granular enough to allow annotation of the physical world? Eg. Viewing Tweets for a particular landmark in environment?
A DSL and app for defining workouts/progressions. Primary audience would be powerlifting/strength+conditioning/etc coaches to program for their clients. Not sure if it will ever go anywhere, but it's an area I'm somewhat familiar with and a fun way to explore some new tech/ideas.
I have 30x500, so I need to work through that at some point, which my disrupt the above.
Interesting, many coaches Ive worked with utilize Google Docs or password protected spreadsheets. Ive always wanted to see TrainingPeaks but for non-endurance athletes.
I'm building OnlineOrNot (https://onlineornot.com) - it's (yet another) uptime monitor, with a twist.
Key differentiator being that it also does page speed monitoring (actual page speed metrics like first contentful paint and largest contentful paint), and tracks your page's resource size over time.
Currently in alpha, with a free tier if you want to check it out.
Still working on https://github.com/openmiko/openmiko - a fully open source firmware for security cameras that doesn't require some cloud server. Privacy and security oriented.
building a form-data extraction API - to extract any form data field-value pairs from images and pdfs; actively working with a couple of existing users.
I made my app MacOS compatible last week and got a few requests for notifications support, so now I am adding that. Not having a HN API for such things is a bit hard to work with.
I am mostly working on Free Hero Mesh these days, which is a puzzle game engine, for turn-based grid-based games involving objects moving around, such as sokoban and Hero Hearts. (It is a reimplementation of a game by Everett Kaser Software (done mainly by making various experiments to determine what the correct behaviour is), but with a lot of improvements, including but not limited to being Free software.) You may write on the NNTP if you are interested to use it or help with it in any way (and/or complaining about it, preferably constructively).
We're trying to help photographers get alerts when conditions are going to be just right for the photo they want to take, but in a much simpler way than most of the other apps out there.
I'm working on a tool to better facilitate one-on-one meetings. Goal being to make the time spent on them better utilized by pre-planning between meetings and having both parties be on the same page for the agenda.
I am working on a BGP hijacking detection and mitigation platform!
It's called Artemis: https://github.com/FORTH-ICS-INSPIRE/artemis
I have also recently started to write blog posts :)
I’m working on https://www.logname.dev .
It’s basically a place for me to keep my resume and generate it on the fly. It also have a portfolio website that shows more info than a typical Linkedin profile.
I'm working on a book that will be published by Holloway later this year. It's titled "Junior to Senior"[0] and will focus on career advice and soft-skills for junior software engineers.
A social cannabis app (since its legal where I live -- Canada). It seems like the available alternatives on the app store generally aren't fulfilling their user's needs.
An open source, decentralised and non-profit platform to facilitate loan-free education that will enable life-long learning, and also increase income of teaching and non-teaching staff of education institutions.
Looking for pirates/rebels to change the education sector for the better. Not an easy task, we may die trying :)

Also, what I realized is: Writing a daily newsletter means shipping something every day. It's exhausting and rewarding at the same time.
If I arrive in a new place, I’d be able to get a “feel” for the place by browsing top posts for current location.
Also useful for annotating the environment. Eg. “Coffee van here on Sundays”, or “aggressive dog seen here”.
I don’t think there’s much demand for such a thing, but I like the idea of having a feed relevant only to my current location.

Currently focused on the product layer and seeing which use cases fit best. So far working with groups in education and knowledge sharing.
