Tools and techniques for home library organization?

How do you catalogue and organize your physical home library?

Do you have any recommendations for tools and/or techniques for managing and organizing a personal library at home (physical books, CDs, DVDs, etc.) Years ago, I used to have a spreadsheet with book information (title, author, year, which shelf/room/box it was stored in, etc) but I haven't maintained it over the years and have moved a few times since.

I would especially like a system that would allow me to easily catalogue and store/archive boxes of books, in case I have to move apartments/houses in the future. Also, ease of updating data would be greatly appreciated.
