WTF Is Dot Tokens?

I understand that Polkadot is a bridge/ interconnection between blockchains. But what is Dot Tokens? Is it a way to invest into Polkadot? or Is it a way to pay for using the Tech? How do new tokens get mined or given (instead of buying from Exchanges)?
