People could get jobs this way. It's a clear indication that somebody's done something noteworthy.
If people get jobs this way, its a sign how bad recruiters are, not that this is anything that needs to be copied.

The badge literally means "made a commit in an essentially random selection of repositories", and is a less informative signal than "contributions to <library>" on a CV.
