Ask HN: Why is there not much research activity in commercial software?

Most research in CS is around AI, Systems and scientific topics, which is great and after all it's computer science so that's how it should be.

However, I can't help but wish there was some more structured research around commercial software engineering. Does anyone else feel the same way?
