Ask HN: Too Late to Get into Cybersecurity?
Hey all,
I have an older friend that's considering getting into the computing field. In particular, he's interested in learning about and possibly pursuing a career in computer security.
He's concerned, however, as he's 48 years old and has little background in information technology.
For the past decade or so he's been running a small convenience store well enough to support himself and his family.
So, I ask you whether you think he has a chance at getting into the industry, given his age and background. Do you think it would be worth him getting a qualification in cybersecurity? Do you think he'd have much of a chance getting a job?
Thanks :)

[ 3.3 ms ] story [ 21.1 ms ] threadA degree is a 2-3 year commitment. Napier university in Edinburgh for instance.
A 48 yo has a life expectancy to 80 or better. There is another 20+ years of work life in him, if he wanted it.
I agree with you completely and have passed your advice on to my friend.
My view is that if it's something he's genuinely interested in, he should go for it.
