It’s too bad the story ended where it did. It seems like the authors could have handed their account over to authorities who could have disrupted that particular gang of cyber thieves.
Maybe they did notify the authorities but did not want to tip their hand? I certainly would do it that way. Also, plausible deniability if the gangsters get caught, and need a scapegoat.
based on the revelations in the article, the pivotal technology being used "this way" is Bitcoin, which is sadly not being misused at all, as it is designed to serve exactly this purpose.
