Europeans can obtain free mental and physical health care at any time. Americans cannot. A single accident or illness could require treatment which could bankrupt us, so we just don't go.
Yes, there are assistance programs. Yes, some (all?) hospitals will waive your debt under certain circumstances, and the existence of those programs is often simply not something that most people are aware of.
Staying out of the doctor's office, (and out of debt) in the first place is an easy (and often deadly) solution that anyone can come up with.
