Seeing the Tartars (2020) (laphamsquarterly.org)

This term seems to survive and be used today in some places. In the Balkans, ethnic Macedonian nationalists who hate Bulgarians use this as a slur to refer to their asiatic/turkic/etc origins and to supposedly distinguish their origins from Macedonians (even though they both have their origins in the same Bulgarian people).
