Ask HN: Is there an open source, hackable printer?

Everyone knows that printers and printer companies are evil. But are there alternatives? I'm thinking replaceable parts, 3D printed components, "use any ink", hackable software, etc. Has this been tried and it's just too hard or are there companies doing it I don't know about?

The current state of printers looks really like a conspiracy involving the government, if you look at this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14501894.
Oh yeh, remember reading that. Maybe printers are the new 5G/implants...!
I understand most MFCs also come with some kind of internal storage that will cache scanned documents, even if printed immediately.
