Ask HN: How/If to ask for a company's help

Dear HN,

I have a problem. The project I'm working on involves getting data from businesses whose web-presence is very non-programmer-friendly (Iframes, embedded flash, no API). I don't know how to go about gathering this data, short of asking the company directly.

Is this a good idea? If so, how should I go about it?
