Ask HN: How many kids do you have and how did you manage it?

Pregnancy is really tough on women. For the couples on HN, how did you manage having kids while holding down jobs ? I know that companies provide maternity leaves for the first child but its only for the woman not the husband. How did you manage to have more than one kid ? I know that most companies are lunatics when it comes to maternity benefits. Did one of you quit your job and start consulting or something ? If you did take a break how did it affect your career ? After the ordeal how is the mother doing and how much care was needed for the baby ? I have known people who quit their jobs to start their own small or medium business.
