It sounds like it may have been a pretty awful partnership for both Bill and Melinda. I can't imagine how it would feel to have it all, as far as many key measures of success are concerned, and yet constantly have this feeling of a psychological thorn in your side.
"Ever since stepping back from Microsoft, Gates has grown to epitomize what might be considered the “Good Billionaire”: a civic-minded, awkward geek who showed how capitalism’s winnings can be marshaled to make the world a better place through philanthropy."

And that he will always be.

People are not fairy tale characters. They are flesh and blood. That Gates had an affair can never take away what he did for the world. If you are a child who got to have a life instead of malaria, you would know perspective from a blown out news cycle.

Thought Experiment: If I run into Bill Gates having coffee in a shop, I might even say Hi or at least smile and wave. If any one of the top 10 Russian/Saudi/Oklahoma oil "tycoons" who have a fraction of Bill's wealth were having coffee (Vodka?) I wouldn't smile or wave for fear they might break my fingers and torture me, my family and friends because why not?

the bloomberg coverage of this has gotten flagged, unflagged, reflagged today on HN[1].

personally wasn't a fan of having a media darling ultra capitalist, who sounded good & reasonable, who invested in good projects, but who also expected all progress to be owned & sold.

Bill Gates is getting canceled because he spoke out against striping the Pharmas of their Covid 19 patents. The "Woke" have him in their sites and the media is 100 % behind them. They are going to tear this guy down.

Just sayin....
