Ask HN: What should I learn next; Rust or Elixir?

My situation is that I must build an API soon and I've got complete freedom of choice regarding how to do it (this is part of the deal). I've decided to take this opportunity to learn something new. Both Rust and Elixir look really interesting and fun to me. However I was wondering what opinions people have regarding which one may be more advantageous to me as a remote developer that doesn't like front end programming. Thanks!

I’d personally look at job trends, particularly remote jobs. Which one has more job listings, and does one have a better growth trajectory than the other? That’s how I’d inform the decision were I in your shoes.

I've been doing a bit of that although I'm not quite sure if I'm looking in the right places to make an accurate assessment of that. Rust seems to be winning out by this metric though.

C# is probably the best if you're after a job, there aren't many jobs in Rust or Elixir afaik.

i would say golang and nodejs are more popular for api's, python is also popular with flask and fast api. lastly my experience is graphql is getting very popular for building api's that power the front end so learning that would also be advantageous.

Rust is a systems language, so while it is possible to build APIs with it, that's not what the language was designed for. For example, in Rust, you'll spend time thinking about memory whereas other languages will just come with GC. That being said, the developer experience and tooling for Rust is phenomenal, and some of its features such as borrow checking and lifetimes are very novel. As the language of choice for building our your API, I would recommend against Rust. But if you're into learning and exposing yourself to new things, definitely give Rust a go.

Go for Elixir. It's a fun language and the documentation is neatly done. Phoenix puts together a lot of things for you already and it's easy to pick up.
