I seriously thought that they were just cashing in and didn't care. It seems like the plot was just a way to move viewers trough Start Wars trope postures, encounters and sayings. Be familiar.
George Lucas is not the best director, but he is good at world building and can write a good story arch. Why didn't ask him to write?
But in an interview with Lucas before that, his plans for Episodes 7 to 9 would have focused on midi-chlorians and the Whills, an order of immortal beings who seemingly controlled everything through the Force:
Remember, George Lucas hates hardcore Star Wars fans. They might be annoying pedants to you, but they actually stalk him.
He has no reason to give them what they want, and probably would have made that movie with the Whills out of spite, if Disney hadn't made him a better offer.
