Do we really believe a focused microwave energy beam will be directed /only/ at power downlink stations?
Exactly my point too. MASERs (the forerunner to LASERs: 'M' stands for 'Microwave') seem to have been forgotten by the general public.

Pretty much anything a LASER can do can also be done by MASERs, and that includes "damage at a distance". So we have weapons in orbit which are supposed to be banned.

I seem to recall recent media controversy about a politician claiming this existed. Perhaps it was just the wording used that made it controversial.
